Starting This Week in Bay Minette, Alabama Offenders of NON-Violent crimes now have a wider array of options. Offenders Now Have The Right To Choose From, under a new program called Operation ROC (Restore Our Community), local judges in Bay Minette, Alabama, will give those found guilty of misdemeanors the choice of serving out their time in jail, paying a fine or attending church each Sunday for a year. After a year of reporting to both the pastor and the police station, the charges are dropped. CNN
Of course there are people that oppose it.
"This policy is blatantly unconstitutional," said Olivia Turner, executive director for the ACLU of Alabama. "It violates one basic tenet of the Constitution, namely that government can't force participation in religious activity."
The way I view it is that it is a great idea, however, where this program started they automatically believe that everyone is a Christian, there are no there are no mosques or synagogues in the area. BUT the keyword in the new program is choice. You are not obligated to pick church. This program seems to be able to actually help restore the community, giving people better values and a better care and concern for their neighbor and fellow man. The Police Chief of Bay Minette says, "It cost at least $75.00 a day to house an inmate," so this program also saves tax payers money.
ON THE OTHER HAND, I DOUBT THAT THIS PROGRAM WORK EVERY WHERE?!?!?!?! THERE ARE ALREAY A BUNCH OF PEOPLE ALREADY THAT ATTEND CHURCH 52 SUNDAYS A YEAR THAT ARE STILL COMMITING NON-VOILENT CRIMES (you will catch that later).
Forced to participate in religious acts? Since when do we control people's lives? America is the hypocrite definition of freedom. What if I'm an atheist? Assholes...
ReplyDeleteI agree with the statement that it violates our constitutional rights. Granted that the keyword is "choice" but who wouldn't participate in going to church to get out of going to jail and having the charges dropped? In essence, this is a form of bullying from the government and I HIGHLY doubt that this program would work. People need rehabiliation, not church!!
