So All of my closest Friends know that I Love the 1989 movie "Steel Magnolias" (which was based on a stage play). So you can imagine my surprise & Excitement when I got wind of the news that Lifetime is developing an original movie based on the hit feature. This new "Steel Magnolias," like the original and the 1987 Robert Harling play it was based on, will be set in small-town Louisiana and will explore similar themes of friendship, heartbreak and personal struggle.
HOWEVER, THERE IS A TWIST!
According to a Sony studio representative, Lifetime is developing the contemporary version of the film that will feature an all-black cast. The original featured the power team of Dolly Parton, Sally Fields, Olympia Dukakis, Shirley MacLaine, Daryl Hannah, and a pre-"Pretty Woman" Julia Roberts, so there's a lot to live up to.
NOW don't get me wrong, I am all for Black Power & Empowerment but why not keep the movie the same way, heck, why even remake it? They could have remade the movie and mixed the cast up, but ALL BLACK? So who would they get to play in it Oprah Winfrey, Viola Davis, Halle Berry and Jennifer Hudson, Madea, Angela Bassett, Loretta Divine, Cassi Davis or Whoopi Goldberg? Lord, Then they going to try and throw in two Busy Old Gems That Need To Sit Down, Maya Angelou & Ms. Jane Pittman, I Mean, Cicely Tyson (Lord, Honor My Prayer & Don't Let Those Two Get Casted).
(Sorry I Had ToO...LOL...I Found a Pic of Those Two and I had a Paint Brush)
Overall, I Think It Might Be Good, Long As they Dont Make It Too Black or Stereotypical!
What Are Your Thoughts On This?
