“And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ… “
~Ephesians 4:11-12
Where exactly does the title “First Lady” come from or fit in the church? Nowhere, in my opinion. The church wants to be set apart from the world but they adopt so many of their concepts. The Title comes basically from the White House. The “First Lady” comes from the government. 'First Lady' has infiltrated many Churches, it has become prestige, it is however gender driven because when the man is ordained as the Pastor or Bishop, his wife is automatically promoted as the First Lady of the Church.
Early leaders of the church, such as Moses, never refer to his Ethiopian wife as the first lady. However, when a Pastor or Bishop is married his wife assumes a position as a first lady, which is not biblical. One cannot assume a position in Church based on marital status or family connections. In many churches, the first lady is allowed to set their own order and movements in God's house with no given biblical authority. The only authority that they have is that they married a vessel of the Lord.
Now I will say that I agree the pastor's wife should set and lead by example the proverbs 31 woman in her life and in her deeds. I don’t want to neglect the fact that some first ladies are called of God and are appointed to positions of minister, elder or co-pastor, in those cases, in my opinion, you are excluded from my argument.
